Grid Modernization Index

The GridWise Alliance’s Grid Modernization Index (GMI) uses data inputs and publicly-available information to evaluate and rank the status of grid modernization efforts across all 50 states and the District of Columbia. This year’s GMI, entitled GMI-2018, was released in December 2018 and is the fifth edition of the report. To download GMI-2018, please click here.

The GMI has become widely recognized across the industry as a resource that benchmarks states on a wide range of grid modernization policies, practices and investments; providing insights into the progress and various approaches. The GMI takes a comprehensive view, tracking dozens of specific changes in each state and highlighting several of the most significant changes in the industry.

The GMI ranks the states on factors in three broad categories:
  • STATE SUPPORT, which is based on plans and policies that support grid modernization
  • CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT, which ranks states on their rate structures, customer outreach, and data collection practices
  • GRID OPERATIONS, which benchmarks the deployment of grid modernization technologies such as sensors and smart meters

The Alliance collects data for the GMI through an online data collection portal. You can access and review the Data Collection Portal here. A main driver for developing the portal was to enable input from a broad array of industry stakeholders.

For more information about the GMI, please contact Richie O’Neill at (202) 495-3135 or roneill@gridwise.org.
