August 2024 GMI Webinar Discussion

Assistant Secretary Gene Rodrigues and GridWise Alliance CEO Karen Wayland discuss this year’s Grid Modernization Index (GMI) project, which GridWise launched on August 6th and will close on September 20th.

GridWise has produced six Grid Modernization Index (GMI) reports evaluating states’ progress in modernizing the electric grid. This year, GridWise is conducting a three-step process with new  questions and a more comprehensive data collection effort to provide deeper insights on state and utility readiness to accommodate the drivers impacting the electric grid in a reliable and affordable manner. The results will inform the upcoming 2024 Grid Modernization Index Report, which is targeted for publication in December.

Utilities, transmission entities, state utility regulators, state energy officials, governors’ staff, and other grid stakeholders should join the webinar to learn more about the Grid Modernization Index process and how to participate. We would greatly appreciate your help in providing information that can help us assess the nation’s progress toward reaching our respective goals through grid modernization.

Don’t miss this opportunity to contribute your insights and help shape the future of grid modernization in the United States!

A New Era of GMI

GridWise Alliance has produced six Grid Modernization Index (GMI) reports evaluating states’ progress in modernizing the electric grid. This year, GridWise is conducting a three-step process with a new survey and more comprehensive data collection effort to provide deeper insights on state and utility readiness to accommodate the drivers impacting the electric grid in a reliable and affordable manner.

This GMI Readiness Framework paper is the first step, where we describe the underlying context for the importance of grid modernization readiness, share a Readiness Framework, and pose readiness questions for consideration by policymakers and regulators. Next, GridWise will reach out to both member and non-member stakeholders to collect information on and discuss the questions posed in this whitepaper. In the final step, GridWise will further develop the Readiness Framework and use it to evaluate states to publish the seventh GMI report, the Grid Modernization Index Readiness Report. This Readiness Report is intended to be a tool for states and electric service providers to evaluate what grid modernization readiness means, identify key challenges, and evaluate their readiness level. Throughout the process, we invite feedback and comments on the Framework to supplement our research efforts.
