In early April, the Biden Administration announced it would seek to deploy 30 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2030. The Administration predicts this goal will unlock $12 billion of investments in wind projects, create tens of thousands of jobs and help meet 2030 and 2050 climate goals. Four Cabinet Secretaries joined National Climate Advisor Gina McCarthy to make the announcement, reflecting a whole-of-government approach to meeting the 30 GW goal, addressing the permitting and financing of projects, port infrastructure, and R&D and data sharing. The announcement included a commitment to approve 16 offshore wind projects by 2025 and $3 billion in loan guarantees from the Department of Energy. GridWise Alliance will focus our work during the month of April on the policy and technology challenges and opportunities in bringing at least 30 GW of offshore wind onshore in the next decade.
